Sometimes, I wish I’d started recording my fashion musings way longer than I have been. My mom often tells me that she used to have a similar [insert piece] to what I’m wearing. I often tell her she should’ve kept some of those pieces. It’s called sustainability mom.
Fashion is cyclical, and we’ve been around long enough to witness trends coming and going. I find myself lusting after things I wore back in 2011. Whether it be a print, a shape, a fabric or a color. It’s weird to realize that the aspects that influence fashion, designers and brands are always circling back. One of my fashion business courses taught me that, to understand the inspiration of a designer, go back to their upbringing.
You can find out who someone is inspired by culturally, musically, socially. Like in the last US election, designers focused a lot on female empowerment, which was a response to what was happening in society. And as you start to grasp that idea, things become simpler to analyze and understand. This year, on the streets, we can find a hard colored influence. It can be a way to fight against such politicized times. So much tragedy going on in the world turns fashion into a magical and colorful escape.
That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to do. Influenced particularly by this account, and several Fashion Month street style pictures, comes today’s look. The first time I saw the combination was here. Then here and here. This color in particular started popping out everywhere. Even in accessories! Then Burberry made it a thing in their new pattern spread around the fashion capitals of the world.
It started popping out of Instagrams and that was it. If it quacks like a duck, right? I found myself at Uniqlo, looking at cashmere sweaters about a month ago, picking my size, heading to the cashier, handing over my credit card and wearing it outside. I have worn it quite a few times, and in a few different ways. But this was one of my favorite. Soon, I’ll be replacing the blazer for my camel coat and maybe a pair of boots.
How are you wearing bright colors this year?
