Documentaries Worth the Hype on Netflix #3

It’s been a while since I’ve posted what I’ve been watching on ze television. Especially on Netflix. I stopped for a bit, because things were getting way too real. I’m like a child and need to watch lollipops and rainbows every now and then. Documentaries take the shit out of you because they’re so real. Not all of them are strong and mind shaking, but I have been seeing a few worth the hype.

Minimalism is a documentary about a certain lifestyle. It’s not an extreme lifestyle, but it can be if you want it to. Two guys who were very successful early in their careers, found themselves struggling with the meaning of the word successful. They thought they would be happy after achieving a certain status but, turns out, they weren’t. They ventured out to discover how their lives could be if they only used the minimum possible. Like having only 3 pairs of t-shirts, 2 pairs of pants, and so on. The documentary shows us people who live with what they produce, people who don’t amount things and people who live as simple as possible with the minimum required. It’s very interesting to see how that’s possible nowadays – and they even have a book!

60’s, 70’s and 80’s are three chapters with 10 episodes each documenting the 3 decades in the US. Each episode focuses on a different thing – music, movies, politics, economics. And by the end, you get an overall feel of the history of America through those decades. It aired on CNN but it’s now available on Netflix and I highly recommend it.

Black Mirror is not a documentary but a sci-fi series. And it’s terrifying and could very well be a documentary. It portrays different scenarios in modern societies. Showing us where social media and technology are heading. I always feel a little bit sick at the end of each episode but can’t help but watch the next. It’s an interesting way of looking at the dark side of technology and how it can easily turn south. I highly recommend because you get this feeling that we are using it too much and this is clearly where it’s headed.
