Poppy’s 6 Month Anniversary and Life Update

Yesterday was Poppy’s 6 month anniversary. Time is flying by with this little cutie and so much has happened, changed and started in our lives. I feel grateful every single day that we got him last August. A few weeks ago, my husband turned to me one night, and said how lucky and happy he felt that we decided to get a dog. It really brings joy to a home. And as he turns 6 months old, there are a lot of things worth documenting.

He’s now at 80% of his total growth – which means he still has 20% to go. He’s going to be a slightly bigger dachshund than we were expecting. Fortunately, we think he’ll always be able to travel with us. He’s traveled 3 times by plane and several by car. I’m very happy to say that he’s a great sport, behaves perfectly and never ever causes us any anxiety. He goes in his little bag but prefers to stay in our laps – which ultimately ends up happening.

My mother was very surprised by how well he behaved the whole time we were in Portugal. He’s very obedient, even at 6 months, rarely does something he’s not supposed to and always stays close to us. We took him to the beach for the first time and he loved it, wasn’t afraid of the water and ran a lot!

Reaching the 6 month anniversary means he’s entering his teen period. So we can expect a lot of humping around. Which is fine, as long as he has somewhere to do it instead of me (ha!). Sometime in the next few months he’s expected to start lifting his leg to pee and spread it out through his walks. He doesn’t like to go outside when it’s raining or snowing, go figure.

But overall, I can say we are very lucky to have him in our lives. He’s always in a great mood, loves to cuddle and sleep with us – although we’re trying to refrain from doing that – and has the sweetest puppy eyes. One thing I also loved witnessing back home, was how comfortable he is with everyone. He would cry a bit if we’d leave him, but my mother told me he ended up being fine. It’s a relief that he’s not that dependable and can easily stay somewhere else, if we end up leaving him for a few hours, a day or two.

Although I miss him being a little puppy that would fit in my lap, I look forward to next few months. He no longer pees inside the apartment, which is great. He loves to play with other dogs and is very friendly. And even though he was bitten a few months ago, hasn’t developed any fears.
