In search of style

definition-of-style, defining-style, what-is-style, in-search-of-style, how-to-be-more-stylish

We hear about style, stylish people, it-girls, it-items, what to wear, what not to wear, what’s trendy and what’s not around ten times a day. If you’re like me and read between ten and fifteen fashion and lifestyle websites daily, you hear it even more. I’ve read articles defining style as a character trait, a personality definition, a simple is better quote and so on, but in the end, what is style? Can we each definite it differently?

I believe style is defined by a number of variables such as behavior, personality, fashion and demeanor. It’s an ever changing aspect of human beings that can be erratic and something that grows with us depending on factors like society, trends and environment. Fashion style is no different or shallow and matters most when it’s the first thing someone else sees.

It’s not an easy thing to do but we get to do it throughout the years, as we grow, mature and figure out what kind of person we are. In Garance’s new book there’s a whole chapter on style which got me thinking about what I want to define for myself and how I want to be perceived when people first glance.

For the past few months, I’ve been working towards having a more grounded, basic and simple style, recurring to some not-so-basic-pieces from time to time. I singled out what I actually want to wear, what feels comfortable, what’s easy to pick and what goes with everything else and ruled out trendy pieces that don’t agree with me, uncomfortable and only-once worn items.

I would love to know your definition of style.
