We all think we are too busy to think about the choices we are making, but we’re not. We have plenty of time to make well-informed decisions about what we choose to do with our bodies. There are so many resources these days that make it impossible not to be healthy. I was lucky enough to grow up in a pretty healthy household, my mother always practiced sports, went to the gym – still does – and cooked mostly healthy meals. My father was always very active and through eating the right things, maintain his weight throughout the years. My brother is freakishly tall and always had healthy habits when taking care of himself. I guess I’m the one who’s weight fluctuated a lot but that’s over now. For quite a few years I’ve been trying to do the right thing and work on the body and mind I want to and, for that, I always worked on some tricks to help through:
1. Cooking at home.
This is true regardless of where I live. I try to make most of my meals at home so I can control what and how I eat. Home eating allows you to know whatever is in your food and avoids excessive salt, condiments and fatter substitutes.
2. H2O intake.
As I repeatedly say, drinking a lot of water throughout the day keeps your body functioning and constantly cleaning waste and toxins that can accumulate over time. Before breakfast or any meal, drink a big glass of water to prepare your stomach and start that hydration process.
3. Know your body, eat what’s right for you.
We all have different ways to react to the food we eat and it’s important to know exactly what your body can take. Not through someone else but through yourself and experimentation. When I found out I was intolerant to a certain amount of foods I had to figure out a diet that would exclude them most of the time, in order to feel well. I had to get creative to eliminate what was causing me to feel so bad. Try it out.
4. Sweat it out.
Again and again, through every means possible, make sure you exercise and get a good sweat on almost daily. Your body gets rid of toxins, your endorphins go up and you always feel better after a workout.
5. Indulge, sometimes.
We all have days we crave something – either sweet or salty. I’m normally a sweet kind of gal so I tackle those cravings with some dark chocolate, for example. And, every now and then, indulge in sugar-y snacks. But make sure you listen to your body and don’t shut down those indulgences, try to control them but feed them once in a while.
