Career Week: My Go-To Interview Outfits

Going to an interview is one of the most nerve-recking experiences I can have. I sweat profusely, blush when I start talking about myself and fail to remember important things to say. But one thing I can be confident about, is my interview outfits. The most controllable thing of the whole situation.

I don’t have only one particular outfit but a few in hand. In my field, there can be very different job environments that need to be handled different. First things first, research about the company you are about to go interview for. Find out if they are a big corporate company, a small creative agency or a casual non-profit organization.

You shouldn’t be very hard to find out and, once you do, get to work. Pick pieces in your wardrobe that can make you dress for the part. You should feel confident and comfortable. Always! But, if you’re in need of some help, here are three different interview outfits for three different environments.

The corporate environment: this is the most conservative I ever dress. I’m always very experimental with my outfits but, when it comes to the corporate world, you should stick to a simple formula. Which doesn’t mean that you have to stir away from your personality and unique style. For an outfit interview, I like to show both my creative and corporate side.

The creative agency: even though agencies are very liberal in what you can wear, it’s important to always look polished and meeting ready. That’s the thought you should follow for an interview. Again, make sure you are comfortable enough to feel confident in what you’re wearing.

The freelance interview: I’ve done this one several times. You want and should look professional but, given that you are a freelance, your interview outfits can look a bit more casual. Always polished, always paying attention to details, never provocative or enhancing anything other than your professional skills.

Do you have any go-to outfits you normally wear to interviews? I would love to know!
