About superstitions

about-superstitions, being-superstitious, up-in-the-air

It’s funny how this conversation comes up often when I’m with friends or family, about being a superstitious person or not. I know people who are highly superstitious, others that aren’t and then there’s in between, which I’m almost sure I’m included. I’m not religious nor I follow any beliefs – although I sympathize with a few points of some – but it’s just the way I was raised. The same way, my father passed on a few of his superstitions which, until this day, I still believe and follow. They are as following, plus a few of my own:

Never celebrate your birthday before the actual day.
Never wear/use presents before your birthday.
Never talk about having any sort of disease.
Be good to people one month before you fly somewhere.
Positive thoughts on the plane.
Never break a promise.
Never talk bad behind someone’s back – or if you do, you better feel bad about it.
Always say thank you, hello and goodbye.

Maybe some of them are just common sense or being polite, but I truly believe in them, case in point, it has happened before that I talk bad behind someone’s back and then trip over something, hit my pinky on the edge of the bed or a grape gets stuck in my throat. Or sometimes, I’m mean to M and, immediately after, I hit my head somewhere – swear it happens!

I believe that these superstitions become rules I follow to ease me into the things that I do, say or think and, for example when it comes to the plane, and given that I’m highly scared of flying, make me feel better about myself and I know everything is going to be okay.

I would love to know about your superstitions, if you have them and what they are. Make sure to leave a comment on the comment section below.
